PacMar Technologies, a privately-owned defense contractor, is seeking an Autonomous Systems Lead Engineer. The incumbent will join a group of talented Engineers, Scientists and Innovators with tremendous top-side potential devoted to solving novel technological problems with national defense implications in the fields of Autonomy and Unmanned Vehicles among others. This position can be in any of our offices, with preference being the Portland, ME or Ann Arbor, MI locations. Position Summary

The ideal candidate will have a M.S. or PhD. in computer science, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, naval architecture, or similar field with an emphasis on system engineering. The individual will develop system frameworks and designs to address customer needs in the field of autonomous and unmanned vehicles. Strong software development experience for physics-based modeling is highly desired. The candidate will be asked to solve technically challenging problems, conduct state of the art engineering simulations, work with teams to develop evaluation plans for system validation and qualify data for training Machine Learning algorithms. Strong engineering fundamentals, ability to work in a team environment and excellent communication skills are required to be successful in this position



Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Lead the architecture and design for multi-domain autonomous systems
  • Develop physics-based models of marine systems and platforms.  Validate models against real-world data – develop test plans as needed to address gaps in validation plans and available data
  • Develop interfaces with other physics models and control systems, some of which may be with external industry partners
  • Develop competitive proposals and follow-on programs for R&D customers, including DARPA, ONR, ARL, NASA, and other government agencies and industry primes
  • Lead execution of advanced technology R&D programs in Principal Investigator roles
  • Lead preparation of reports and creation of presentations
  • Support company marketing and business development via technical briefings, publications, conferences, and professional outreach activities




Position Requirements:  

Employment is contingent upon successfully passing an employee background check and post-offer drug screen.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, or similar field – Advanced degree in one of the same areas preferred
  • 7+ years of professional experience, or advanced degree and 3+ years of professional or post-doctorate experience
  • Systems approach to engineering and problem solving – ability to identify a problem / opportunity, define solution requirements and develop new solution theory in a less structured environment
  • Demonstrated experience in development of systems modeling and simulation
  • Established background in Autonomy, Robotics, or Unmanned Systems, with technology focus in AI, machine learning, and/or cognitive systems
  • Proficiency with IDE-based object-oriented programming in C/C++ and either Python or Matlab /or Simulink
  • Demonstrated ability to interact independently with R&D customers as PI or SME
  • Demonstrated small team leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • US Citizenship

Desired Skills:

  • Experience in Human Systems Integration (HSI), User Interfaces (UI), Multi-Vehicle Tasking, and/or Mission Planning for Unmanned Systems
  • Experience in prototyping, hardware / system development and demonstration
  • Familiarity with system and platform testing methods and data processing
  • Familiarity with DevSecOps practices
  • Strong software configuration management and troubleshooting skills
  • Experience in Neural Networks, Deep Learning and Reinforcement Learning
  • Capable of working independently and as a part of a highly flexible engineering team
  • Able to demonstrate initiative and possess time management skills to meet deadlines
